A movie producer saw my Vic posted on the Facebook Marketplace and will pay me* $100 plus fuel and bridge toll to take it to San Francisco on Saturday to be a prop in a scene he’s shooting about a dystopian future. The Crown Victoria is the cockroach of American automobiles because in a dystopian future, the M3s and the SSs will all be gone, but ex-cop, ex-taxi Vics will still be around.
* Actually, Missus is going to earn the $100 because I will be in Turlock at the annual swap meet.

I hope the missus comes prepared -- she could be there all day depending on how quickly they are able to get the shots needed.

Dude tells us he needs us for an hour. I thought this might be overly optimistic, but I plan on taking this up with him again.

I would block out a minimum 4 hours on set.
Many moons ago, I did a couple of promotional video for a corporation I used to work for. Both videos’ final run time were less than 15 minutes.
One took 6 hours on set. The other took close to 9 hours.

I will bring this up.

Cool. Just keep in mind that sincerely they want to be done within the quoted hour. Multiple takes and at multiple angles maybe needed and each one will take time to do it properly and safely.

Like others have said, I’d assume it will take like longer on set. I did a segment of C-SPAN’s cities tour a few years ago that featured what I used to do for the university in the archives. I talked in front of a camera for over two hours almost continuously to get what amounted to five minute segment.

So the movie is set in 2022?

That’s not enough money. Must be a small budget movie. Tell him make it $500 and you’ll add a couple more dents and dirt to make it look really old. You’ll get more practice removing dents in the end! Win-win!!

It definitely fits the theme.

Yes, I am sure. The director who contacted me is very sincere and I am interested in doing this because fun and because help him out. I am thinking of asking them for something like $25 or $30 an hour for extra hours.

Yes, eyes wide open on that. I’ll ask them for a smaller hourly amount, like $25, for hours after the hour they scheduled me. At some level, I just want to help these guys out. This is not Walt Disney Studios...

Right.

It’s small budget. At one level, I’m trying to help them out. I’ll ask them for an hourly amount, maybe $25/hr, for the hours past what they schedule. The director is seriously jazzed about having the car on his set though.

...cockroach... How apt is that?!

Very.

Nice! My truck had its 15 minutes of fame on the BBC/PBS special a couple years back. They paid me $500 but they drove the truck around for a day, and I let them have it then night before to set up cameras, etc.

These guys offered to just pick up the car, but I balked at that because I’m still getting the kinks out and if someone loaned me their beater Vic, I’d probably pound on it just a little.

Very cool!

Yeah I could see them offering to “ pick it up” and sending 2 teenagers over to get it, which would only result in a race all the way back at a minimum, maybe worse.

If it were PBS/BBC, I’d have no problems letting them take my car. These guys seem very okay generally...

You actually spoke to the director and not just some set coordinator?
![]() 01/21/2020 at 15:22 |
|
Yes. He contacted me, actually. My sense is that these are more of beginners trying to run a production professionally.

Good on you for helping them out, but let’s hope this is more of a Get Out or Duel and not a The Room or Birdemic.

There’s another thin layer to this for me personally: my wife is actually going to drive the car over on Saturday and since they’re paying the toll and the fuel, she’s down for picking up a hundred clams. (That Vic is like driving an aircraft carrier...) I’ll ask them to pay something for subsequent hours on set, like $25 or so.

Ah yes, I read the other comments and generally agree that you will be in for a little more cash for overtime. Good luck with that!
